Story 31: Adoption

The story: The board resolution was clear: AI adoption, top priority for Q3. A month later she presented the results. Tool usage up 300%. He stared at the screen. Where are the redesigned workflows? She had measured access and activity. He had expected the work itself to change. The board asked for adoption and got logins.
What it means for organisations: Adoption has two readings, and one of them is countable. People are using the tools, or the work has been rebuilt around what the tools make possible. Both are adoption. But only the first produces a chart, so it is the one that gets reported, defended, and eventually believed. The measurable version does not win the argument. It just arrives first, and the other one is still being built when the quarter closes.

Scene 1: The board resolution
A top-down view of a busy desk covered with papers, a notebook, pens, paper clips, a coffee cup, and a laptop. In the center lies a yellow folder labeled "BOARD RESOLUTION #14: AI Adoption – Top Priority for Q3." No one is present, and no one speaks.
Banner between scenes: “What could go wrong?”
Scene 2: One month later
A meeting room with windows onto the city, plants, a bookshelf, and a table with laptops, notebooks, and cups. Ally stands proudly beside a flip chart that reads "AI TOOL USAGE: UP 300%." Axel sits at the table behind his laptop, unconvinced.
Axel: Where are the redesigned workflows? Just using AI tools isn't adoption…
