Story 13: Innovation

The Alignment Gap Story 13: Innovation

The story: Everyone was in. "Let's innovate more this quarter" filled the board with sticky notes. Then she came back with a plan to become AI-first and revolutionise everything. He had meant small process tweaks. One heard iteration, the other heard transformation, and the room had felt unanimous either way.

What it means for organisations: Innovation is one of the most energising and least defined words in business. It can mean a new feature, a new process, a new business model, or scrapping the whole thing and starting again. Those are not variations on one idea, they are four different quarters. And the enthusiasm in the room is what keeps anyone from asking which one is on the table, because agreement that feels this good does not look like it needs checking.

Scene 1: The whiteboard

An office with a large whiteboard, plants, a desk with a laptop, and a window onto the city. On the whiteboard is written "Let's innovate more this quarter!", surrounded by yellow sticky notes that all say "I'm in!" Axel stands to one side, smiling. Ally sticks one more "I'm in!" note on the board. No one speaks.

Banner between scenes: “What could go wrong?”

Scene 2: The presentation

The same office. Ally stands proudly in front of a yellow presentation board that reads "Revolutionize Everything: BECOMING AI-FIRST." Axel sits at his desk behind his laptop, alarmed, hands raised.

Axel: Change everything? I meant small process tweaks – not chaos!
